Ryan Chin (MIT Media Lab): Collective versus Individual Customization
MCPC 2007, Conference Coordinator
Ryan Chin is research assistant at the MIT Media Lab in the Smart Cities research group, studio coordinator for City Cars and members of the MIT Mass Customization Interest Group. Ryan Chin is a master of science in media arts and sciences and a master of architecture; and earned his bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering and architecture from the Catholic University of America. He is PhD candidate for Media Arts and Sciences in 2008.
At the MIT Lab he is working on the design of the car of the future. The two-seater is a stackable, sharable, electric city vehicle that rethinks urban mobility. This car doesn't hurt pedestrians, changes colour depending on the driver's mood and takes over the driving in traffic. Together with General Motors everyday problems such as parking, congestion, energy efficiency and pollution are trying to be solved by using available resources in urban environments.
In 2007 Ryan Chin assisted Professor William J. Mitchell, Frank T. Piller, and Marvin Minsky in founding the Smart Customization group at the MIT Design Lab. The main focus of the Smart Customization group is on supporting companies in order to guarantee an efficient customization of their products and services.
